Ban Tha Khan Thong

Chiang Rai

Ban Tha Khan Tong Homestay is a small community along the side of the Khong River in Amphur Chiang San, Chiang Rai province. This place is fascinating because it is where many people from the northeast of Thailand moved over to the northern region, which means that visiting children will get to experience two distinct cultures. Our community offers activities such as farming and gardening, where children get to relax in the beautiful countryside and also closely observe the lives of the farmers. We have rubber plantations for tapping, cornfields, a sacha inchi farm, and a mulberry farm. We also have nice, green rice paddies where the children can become tiny farmers for the day and run around freely, or play in the mud pond and go down our famous mudslide. With all this, Ban Tha Khan Tong Homestay is just as exciting as any other community.

Rice Cultivation

At Ban Tha Khan Tong homestay, we have “demo” farming land where children can transform themselves into tiny farmers, run around freely, breathe in fresh air and take in all the greenery. After trying a bit of farming for themselves, they will know all the processes of how to make the rice that they eat every day.

Play On a Mud Slide

Not so far from our farmland, there is a naturally-made mudslide where the children will get to slide from the top down into the mud pond. They can enjoy playing in the pond among the farmlands and mountains, another must-try activity here in our community!

Tour Old-fashioned Rice Mill

Children will get to learn the process of how to make rice by visiting our rice mill. They will get to witness the milling machine which is made of wood, and you will get to make rice manually, which involves removing the husk by spinning the wooden mill by hand, and the filtering the husk from the rice. Repeat this five times until you get nice, clean, safe unpolished rice filled with good vitamins for your health.

Hunt for Sacha Peanuts

Another great highlight at Ban Tha Khan Tong is our sacha inchi seed farm. These seeds are shaped like stars, and the children will be so excited when they see the sacha inchi tunnel. They will get to collect these seeds and roast them into delicious, aromatic snacks.

Go Fishing/Collect Duck and Chicken Eggs

There are many hidden gems hidden in our village, and one of them is Khun Pai and Mr. Graham’s house that has a small, friendly farm where the hens and ducks live together in peace. Children can go inside to feed them and collect fresh eggs every morning. In addition, there is a pond where the children can learn how to fish by using bait or casting nets.

Kid’s Kitchen

After the children have collected the raw materials from Mr. Graham’s farm, they can then use these as ingredients to cook tasty dishes such as duck egg omelets, grilled fish, kid-friendly somtam, and grilled sticky rice with sweet pumpkin which is fragrant and delicious.

Making Stuffed Dough Pyramids (Khanom Tien)

Children will get to make stuffed dough pyramid desserts from our community’s special recipe, assisted by the locals. Our stuffed dough is soft from the inside with coconut stuffing that is fragrant, sweet and tastes amazing.
